Transition Week: from Pre-School to Kindergarten
In Term 4, Ashfield Public School offers a Transition Week for preschool children and their families.
Transition Week enables children and families to become familiar with school routines, procedures, facilities, teachers, and special programs. The program supports children to feel comfortable, relaxed and motivated to join school in the new year. It provides a sense of belonging to their new school community.
During the Transition Week, children attend school from 9am to 10:30am each day.
Contact the school to book into Transition Week.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, all families meet with one of our assistant principals. This is a time to share:
- medical conditions or allergies
- learning support needs
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.
Getting ready at home
You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines. Try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- dressing themselves and practicing hygiene
- following simple routines at home.
What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, Crunch 'n Sip, Break Times, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school.
Buddies
Our Year Six buddy program fosters leadership and connection, with senior students helping Kindergarten students become familiar with routines, build confidence, and develop social skills through shared activities, reading time, and regular check-ins throughout the year.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children complete the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
