The Chinese Community Language Program (CLOTE) at Ashfield Public School started in the 1980s. Our program provides opportunities for native Mandarin speakers to consolidate their first language skills. We believe that developing a child's first language skills will benefit and enhance their learning of English as a second language. The program is closely linked with other KLA outcomes and follows the Language syllabus of the Department of Education. As a support program, we also provide support for students in an array of areas, including mathematics and problem-solving, literacy, well-being programs, inquiry-based learning, talent and enrichment groups.
In our Language Other Than English Program (LOTE), Chinese language classes provide a cultural language program for non-native speakers. We aim to develop awareness, understanding and acceptance of different cultures at Ashfield Public School.
We are also very closely linked with the Hanban Confucius Institute Headquarters Oceania Office in Melbourne. We have in recent years received generous donations of books and resources. Every year, Ashfield Public School has had the pleasure and honour of participating in symposiums and conferences organised by the Hanban to promote positive Chinese-Australian relationships.
