The School Plan

The NSW Department of Education (DoE) requires each public school to have a School Plan. This plan is about an individual school strategically meeting the needs of its community to improve the quality of teaching and outcomes for all students.

The Ashfield Public School Plan 2018-2020 was published at the end of last term. It sets an improvement agenda by focusing the whole school community on working collaboratively to engage all students in successful learning and to nurture their wellbeing within a safe and well-run school.

The School Plan is linked to the DoE School Excellence Framework (SEF). This document provides a clear description of the key elements of high quality educational practice across the three domains of learning, teaching and leadership. The SEF is focused on young people developing the foundation skills of literacy and numeracy, strong content knowledge and the ability to learn, adapt and be responsible citizens.

Using the SEF as its basis, the School Plan identifies three strategic directions: 1) Teaching, 2) Learning, and 3) Practices as the key areas of ongoing whole school improvement. The aim of each direction is to make a profound difference to the ongoing growth and development of our school, our students and our teachers across the next three years.

Each direction articulates processes which are high quality activities that sustain and grow across time. These processes will result in products which are high value outcomes associated with a collaborative school that develops excellent teaching practices, creates wellbeing and achieves student outcomes.

As a strategic plan our School Plan also includes evaluation and improvement measures to gauge the success of the processes and products. As a highly interactive document, this involves all teachers and school leaders collaboratively and regularly using data to monitor the effectiveness of their own practices and the practices of teams and school systems.

The School Plan is about clearly identifying where we are going as a school and the actions required to achieve the learning outcomes of every child. It is a document calls for accountability and focuses the whole school’s attention on core learning priorities while maintaining the flexibility to be responsive to context, learning needs and circumstances as required.

The School Plan is grounded in educational research and creates a whole school culture where there is a shared understanding of and a commitment to using what works best. It is a document for accountability and will guide all decisions and actions. At the heart of what we do here at Ashfield Public School, it is a strong and optimistic commitment and a clear belief by all staff and parents that ongoing improvement and school excellence are always possible.
